🌿 Origins

Lunaria Estate: Rooted in Wisdom, Grown in Harmony

There is a way of working with the land that cannot be rushed. It begins with observation, with paying attention to what is already there rather than imposing something new too quickly. Over time, patterns begin to emerge. You start to see what is thriving and what is struggling, where structure has been lost, and where the soil is no longer supporting what grows above it. This way of seeing becomes the foundation for everything that follows.

I do not approach a garden, a tree, or a piece of land with a fixed outcome in mind. The most enduring landscapes are not designed in a single moment. They are shaped gradually, through a series of decisions that respond to what is actually needed. This often means stepping back before stepping in, allowing the space to reveal itself before making changes. Light, water, growth, and time all leave their mark, and understanding those patterns is what allows the work to move forward in a way that feels cohesive rather than forced.

This way of working has been shaped over years spent in the landscape, noticing small changes, making careful adjustments, and learning when to act and when to wait.

The work itself is grounded and practical. It happens in real spaces, with overgrown fruit trees that have been left without direction, with soil that has become compacted or depleted, and with gardens that no longer feel balanced or alive in the way they once did. Each project asks for attention and patience, and for a willingness to see clearly before acting. There is no benefit in rushing decisions that will shape the structure and health of a space for years to come.

My work spans garden consultation, home orchard pruning, and soil restoration, but these are not separate disciplines. They are different expressions of the same system. What happens above the surface is inseparable from what is happening below it. Structure, soil, and timing are always in conversation with one another, and the work is guided by that relationship.

I am not into quick fixes or surface-level change. The goal is not to force a result, but to guide a space back into clarity, balance, and long-term health. This requires restraint, careful timing, and a willingness to let the process unfold over time rather than trying to resolve everything at once.

I take on a small number of projects each season so that each one receives the level of attention it deserves. The work begins by understanding what a space is asking for, and then responding thoughtfully, with decisions that support its future rather than just its immediate appearance.

Gorgeous Gardens + Landscapes, Rooted in Nature

Hello! I’m a Visionary with a deep passion for sustainable, pollinator forward landscapes.

About Me

Hi, my name is Melissa Humphries, and I am the creative force behind Lunaria Estate. I grew up exploring the forests, mountains and gardens of Vermont, and have always felt deeply connected to this beautiful landscape. I found myself focusing on gardening and wellness, initially as a personal passion and then as the foundation of my life’s work. When not gardening or foraging, you can find me sailing on Lake Champlain, recreating in the outdoors and writing poetry and fiction.

Drawing upon years of education, hands-on gardening experience, and my background in the UVM Master Gardener Program, I specialize in creating niche experiences that integrate mindful wellness, sustainable practices, and respect for nature’s wisdom. My approach is calm, practical, and deeply rooted in a commitment to low plastic and organic gardening, native plant cultivation, and working with—rather than against—the natural rhythms of the earth.

Whether you’re navigating garden challenges, like unexpected pests, or simply seeking guidance to create balanced, thriving outdoor spaces, I’m here as your mentor and trusted advisor. I practice non-attachment, helping you embrace gardening as an evolving, joyful journey rather than a fixed goal.

Together, let’s nurture growth, in your garden, in your health, and in harmony with the world around you.

🌿 Garden + Landscape Consulting

I specialize in:

Hugelkultur beds
Sustainable, self-sufficient garden beds that retain moisture and build soil fertility over time. Whenever possible, materials are sourced directly from your property rather than brought in from elsewhere.

Wooded estate management
Thoughtful land stewardship that enhances biodiversity while creating usable, intentional space. Trails, woodland gardens, and privacy can all be shaped with a clear plan.

Native plantings and companion vegetable gardens
Low-maintenance, ecologically grounded plantings that work with natural systems rather than against them.

Specialized pruning for fruit and ornamental trees
Structural pruning that improves form, light, and long-term health. This includes renovation of overgrown fruit trees as well as
careful shaping of ornamental specimens.

Soil fertility program
Targeted soil testing, amendments, and properly timed applications to restore strength, color, and resilience. This work focuses on the foundation beneath the garden, where long-term health begins.

A well-designed garden should support your life, not become a seasonal burden. With the right planning, it can bring structure, beauty, and productivity without demanding constant upkeep.

I offer both virtual and in-person consultations within Chittenden County, Vermont. Each consultation provides clear, personalized guidance on layout, plant selection, and long-term care. While installation is left to you or your preferred contractor, the plan itself is precise, actionable, and designed to carry the project forward with confidence.
